Girl Witch Costume Ideas
These days, girl witch costumes come in a variety of styles and colors. There is virtually a witch costume style for each individual taste. From “white witch” to “wicked witch” this website presents an array of costume ideas for your little witch.
So, which witch is which, you may ask yourself. Basically Halloween witch costumes fall under two major influences, both of which in turn, seem to have been popularized by the two witch characters in the Wizard of Oz. There is the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the West. Good vs evil – these are the classic Halloween witch styles.
Under the banner of good witches, those who cast their spells for purity and virtuousness, are the Glitter Witches, bedecked and bejewelled with glitter and rhinestones, shining examples of bewitching radiance. Next, the Kandi Korn Witch who uses her colorful, cuteness to cast a spell upon all who behold her. And of course, this also includes the White Witch herself, a veritable fairy queen, complete with jeweled crown and wand.
The wicked witches have a long and troubling Halloween history and despite the demise of “The Wicked
Witch of the West,” following her lethal dousing with a bucket of water, they have Halloween scariness on their side and have staged a popular come-back. There are many wicked witch costumes to choose from including, midnight witch, Gothic witch and black sorceress. One thing they all still share is the color
black, a love of spiders, bats and black cats. Brooms are still the preferred means of travel, although there are several new cross-over models in vogue (increasing mileage through use of feathers rather than straw).
At Halloween time, witches really do have more fun, not to mention, an amazing power to enchant those around them – so beware and trick or treat!
In the Wizard of Oz Movie of 1939, the role of the Good Witch of the North, “Glinda,” was played by American actress, Billie Burke. She became an icon of the White Witch in this role and was more like a beautiful and angelic, fairy queen, than the usual Gothic witch depiction.
The Wicked Witch of the West was played brilliantly by actress Margaret Hamilton. Dressed entirely in black, stooped, green skinned with long nose and squinty eyes, she became the very icon of the evil and wicked witch. In addition, there was something really creepy about her army of flying monkeys (they still give me nightmares)!
